The Hopeful Feeling of Distance

There is a certain type of hopefulness that I feel when looking out at things that are far away. Living on the coast, where the land is lumpy, I catch refreshing glimpses of the distance during my day, from the tops of hills and from the edges of land.

20 Minutes from the Office

So, this morning my painting group was meeting at Tower Point, part of Wittie’s Lagoon in Metchosin. I’ve tried to drive to Wittie’s Lagoon many times. Most of the time, I don’t bring a proper map, and I usually end up at Albert Head, which is a great spot, but not really where I’m supposed to be. It’s a great spot to watch thunderstorms, which are rare around here. When clouds roll into town, the horizon seen from Albert Head is where the clouds hang out. It was great this morning, sitting out on the wild beach, just 20 minutes from the office, thinking “Hey, look! I can see the office! Suckers! I’m at the beach, chillin’ here with my painting gear and my morning coffee.” It’s nice, like a mini-vacation, sitting in the wilderness with downtown Victoria in the distance. The city sure looks quieter from here.
